According to David Chan, "Calligraphy is one of the most popular Chinese art form. There are far more famous calligraphers than painters in history. This proves how important calligraphy is." David Chan has been practicing calligraphy for more than 30 years. His usual style is "wild cursive" (狂草), with only a few words in each piece, characterized by exquisite composition and construction of each character.
Master Chan brings together the spirit of modern art and freedom in his works, which led to the breakthrough in his calligraphy art. His art transcends the boundaries of traditional calligraphy transforming calligraphy into paintings. He introduces western ideas and adds colour to his art. Moreover, he believes that the "Chinese brush" is a medium that belongs to the entire world. He now introduces the use of the Chinese brush to do calligraphy in different writing systems, just like Japanese and Koreans using the Chinese brush in their own calligraphy.
On the theme of "Love and Peace", David Chan sees that the world is in constant dispute as different nations adhere to their different perspectives to view the world. Cultural differences are evident in their different writing systems: Latin, English, Italian... are written from left to right. On the other hand, Hebrew, Arabic are written from right to left. David Chan believes that when people drop their rigid angles and see things from a new perspective, the world will witness more love and peace.
